Crafty in the Med

I am here to enjoy meeting other bloggers and to share my love of craft ,mostly crochet, my thoughts and my daily happenings here in Alicante,Spain, my adopted country. I belong to a local choir because singing and music makes me happy. Flea markets and book shops are two of my favourite places to be. I read lots......sci´fi/fantasy,buried treasure, and off world adventures. I have a passion for history! I walk and walk and walk for about 10 months per year during the hot months I swim.

thank you very much ...not!

As if I didn't have better things to do...

My neighbours and I received last Thursday notification from the Town Hall indicating that our address has been changed.

Alicante Town Hall

We are not a street any more but an avenue!  The avenue has been named after a certain Alicantino citizen who the city wish to publicly honour and who they believe deserves public recognition.  There was even a ceremony to uncover the new name plaque! Do you think we were invited, we were not. Do we know who this person is who has been granted this honour,we don't. I certainly don't and even Sr P said he doesn't know him either and Sr P practically knows everyone in Alicante!

Now... we have a very long list of places we have to notify of our change of address and lots of documents have to be changed.

Really!    I am not amused!😞

Relics

Many thanks to Meredith for this inspiration from her recent very intriguing post on her blog Mereknits.    It has reminded me it is something I had in the back of my mind to do! I am not getting any younger and I have the time to do this now,so I thought I should make a start. I am thinking if I write about one family treasure/ heirloom in each post I can then later collate it all into a single pdf document and save it on a pen drive. At least that is the goal! There are some things I just don't want to be lost and my great grandchildren will need to know why I kept all these things over the years and likewise why my mother did and my grandmother did.

I am starting off with this tin-box which is bit of a family joke .  It isn't really that much of a relic/heirloom as it is approximately 38 years old but it has been with me as of day one back then in 1981 when  I opened my own language school... all those years ago.

I started my school in a small premises which had an office and one classroom. Funds were pretty limited after decorating and furnishing the school (not really a school then) and paying for a large amount of publicity.  Can you imagine day one taking in enrolment fees from parents and I had no cash box at all and no money to spare to buy one. All monies paid in were haphazardly stuffed in an envelope.  That lunch time I went home and looked around for some sort of box or tin to put the cash in and to take back with me to the school that afternoon.  I had been shopping the previous weekend and had brought a special offer of frozen Fish Fingers and this tin " Captain Igloos Treasure box " was part of that special offer. I won't go into more detail but this became our cash box and it also became quite a novelty. I became so attached to it that I refused to use the new one that we brought later on and always used the treasure box for the petty cash. When I transferred the business to my daughter she said she wanted the treasure box too so it stayed there until she opened up her own school in other premises. Even though it was pretty tatty I was determined not to lose sight of it and I made sure it came back to me. It always triggers a rush of memories every-time I use it or look at it! It has been with me so long and I still use it for little treasures that I want to keep safe.

RAOCK

I  feel quite pleased with myself as I am steadily using up all the leftovers in my stash to make RAOCKs. This is my latest creation:  Anja the Orange tree gnomess.

She will be going out smile 😀 hunting as from this Friday.

I apologise if I haven't finished replying to comments on my last post but this new medicine I am taking makes me queasy. I lie down on the settee for a little while, munch on a cracker and drink some water and the feeling drifts away. During the good intervals I can get back to writing.

Happy Blogging

Amanda :-)

  1. Dear Amanda
How annoying about the change of address, particularly as it's one you didn't instigate! It's great to have such special possessions which evoke such good memories. Priceless to you! I am sure Anya will be much loved in her new home.
    Best wishes

  2. I love Anja how cute! I would be very annoyed if they changed my address too what a pain to have to get all your documentation altered because of it, what were they thinking of! they should have asked the residents first what a cheek. What a lovely idea to write about each of your treasures, I loved reading about Meredith's and I will love reading about yours too. That's a lovely story about the treasure box if it were mine I would never want to be parted from it. You have both got me thinking I haven't got much in the way of family treasures but I do have a few so I may do similar. Have a lovely week. xx

Sorry you have all that address changing to do. Think of it as a new adventure to celebrate by doing something nice for yourselves.

  4. Wow I would not be happy either with address change like that-so much to change even address labels-craziness.
I enjoyed reading your post and about your cash box-and I Love this little gnome I have always loved gnomes I have a few made from an sculpture that my husband bought me years ago for little gifts and my Mom bought be wall plates with gnomes-I should find a spot to hang those up.
no fun getting sick from medicine-I am still feeling some of the after effects. we went in to get our 2nd pfizer shot and she rmemebered my poison ivy I said you can't see it but my worse arm still burns and hurt-she said sounds like nerve damage-hope this goes away soon Happy rest of your week Kathy

    1. Hello Kathy, I am going to steer very clear away from poison ivy from now on! How awful you still have unpleasant reactions from it. Has your doctor given you anything for the pain? I must admit I am fond of gnomes too and they are so easy to make; a hat and dumpy body and the rest a variety of attachments. I am pleased with my gnomess and I hope who finds this RAOCK will enjoy having her. A x

  5. The change of address is very annoying, especially as no-one seems to know who it's named for! You've made me think about my treasures. I really must write down what they are and why I've kept them, although both my children are somewhat minimalist, so I don't think many will survive once I've gone. The little gnome is so cute - you're inspiring me to get the hooks out. I do hope your health improves soon, you seem to have been "not right" for far too long. xx

    1. All these changes...so tedious! Treat the write up about your treasures as if it were going to go in a Time capsule for future generations. It won't necessarily be your children who will be interested in them but your grandchildren or great grandchildren. Love to see any of your crochet makes! A x

  7. How frustrating to have your address changed without warning like that!

What a fun story about your cash box, and what a cute gnome you have made. She will have no trouble finding smiles.

I'm sorry to hear about the health issues. I hope you'll be able to adjust to the new medicine.

I plan to leave her out in the big shopping centre for someone to take home. The new medicine is ongoing little result at present. A x

  10. What a nuisance for you and so unnecessary too. That sort of thing really bugs me.

I love the box story - things like this have such value, just not money-based.

And I love Anja - what a character!

Take care and I hope the sickness fades away soon

    1. Hello Kathy, Thank you for popping by. I had that school for 38 years and passed the thriving business over to my daughter who was just getting started and then COVID hit and in a question of a month everything had to be closed down. Luckily she was able to give some online classes to her old pupils and students. The future is uncertain though at present. A x

  13. Sorry about the address change. Having just done that ourselves because of the move, I do know how convoluted it becomes. And to have it dictated for no good reason makes no sense.
I loved the story of your cash box. Of course it must be kept! And that your daughter treasured it too makes it even more special.
    Love your sweet little gnome.💜

I never realised that notifying everyone of our change of address would be so complex. Why can't they except just an email or a phone call and not all this peperwork I have to fill in and send. TCH! 16. That change of address sounds like bureaucracy gone mad. And most discourteous, actually, not to consult or involve you.
Your Treasure box has an interesting history - looking forward to the next item!

  18. I thought I previously left a comment here but am not seeing it. I recall having internet issues at the time; sometimes it's too slow and a comment won't go through. :/ Hope you are feeling better with the new medicine you are taking. Address changes can cause such confusion and it seems especially ridiculous that the cause for your street name change is to honor someone no one has heard of and without any prior notification. I can see why you'd be irritated. My son moved within state but did a temporary address change instead of permanent one and it turned out to be the biggest mess ever. He didn't get any mail for quite a long time because the post office kept returning it all to senders even when he went there several times and tried to rectify. Finally he was able to talk directly to his postal delivery guy and was able to get it sorted out that way. Fun story of the little treasure tin; a keeper for sure. Cute little gnome, too. Take care.

    1. Hi Tammy, Thank you for popping by. I am not feeling so queasy now but this new medicine is taking its time to sort out my digestive problems. We will see :-) After asking around we now know who our street has been named after. A person here in Alicante who has done a lot of good which is all very worthy but the council could have certainly taken us the neighbours into consideration. All the paperwork this is causing is monotonous and time consuming. A x
