I am here to enjoy meeting other bloggers and to share my love of craft ,mostly crochet, my thoughts and my daily happenings here in Alicante,Spain, my adopted country. I belong to a local choir because singing and music makes me happy. Flea markets and book shops are two of my favourite places to be. I read lots......sci´fi/fantasy,buried treasure, and off world adventures. I have a passion for history! I walk and walk and walk for about 10 months per year during the hot months I swim.

There's a big one and a little one and they are all made of .....

Button lovers unite

Ezinearticles tells us that Button-like objects have been found in the Indus Valley of ancient India and date back to around 2000 B.C.E. These were not used for fasteners, but as for ornaments and much before they were used as we know them pins, leather lacing and belts were used to secure clothing.
Anyhow before buttons could be used as fasteners, the button hole had to be invented and that wasn't  until quite later in the 13th century in Germany. Ever wonder why men's suit coats have non-functioning buttons sewn on the sleeves? They say that King Frederick of Prussia started the practice in the 18th century. The rumor goes that after an inspection of his troops, he ordered that buttons be sewn on the sleeves of their coats to discourage them from wiping their noses on them!
Yuk! my imagination is working overtime now....can just picture that )-:

Definition of being BUTTONS obsessed:
in other words omphaloskepsis....oooops! no..... sorry that's the wrong button obsession that's if you are obsessed with your navel! 
 so ....what is the definition of being obsessed with buttons?
I mean is this denoted by trembling hands as you near a tray of buttons in your local haberdashery shop ....perhaps dabbing at your mouth to avoid the drool dripping on the shiny new buttons....a dithering attitude and constant change of mind as you try to choose which ones you are going to purchase.....restless sleep and nightmares after not being able to take them ALL home with you.....arguing with yourself as you try to decide if you can do without that extra loaf of bread so you can go back and buy those wooden buttons that were practically saying BUY ME to you in the shop.....and so I continue to query...
but perhaps you can enlighten me????

    Oh, I'm a button collector too! I have a big jar in my sewing room. Can't wait to see what you're up to in crochet. I finished my Brugges scarf to send to a friend and now I'm on other projects in hopes they'll be done by Christmas. XOXO

    Oh my gosh! Do you have to weave in all those ends? That's kind of scary! Pretty colors. Just focus on the pretty colors.
    I have a jar of buttons too. A few are antique, that I bought at quilt shows years ago. I will probably never use them. Just like to look at them!

    Wow lots of buttons. I didn't realize how important they were till I started using them for the middle of my handmade flowers. The right button makes all the difference. Love the colours of your crochet surprise. Have a lovely week.

    O'h Amanda,I am a buttonaholic! although I have to say recently I have been sharing mine with my craft group as they have needed them.I will do a blog on them but it will be embarrassing. As I go around on my mail delivery it seems the whole town is aware and last year i was given 2 precious tins of buttons from 2 ladies that were their Grannies,they are so old and in the lid of the tins i have put a note who gave them to me and when.I just love buttons and put them on things whenever I can.The grandchildren love them.Looks like another lovely item coming up soon.

    I love buttons and have lots.My granddaugher E loves playing with them, sorting them into colours and I usually end up making her something using her favourites.

    I adore buttons and I have two tins of them. One tin belonged to my Nanna , who got them off her mother, who got them off her mother . There are some beauties, and some horrors. I can't get rid of them ever! Some are bone! My Grandad used to tell me they were made from human teeth lol they are actually whale bone!

    Thanks for sharing the history too ! Just to add ( can't stop myself :)) , Indus valley was a part of ancient India, there is no ancient Pakistan. But after partition in 1947, Pakistan came into existence and the major part of that valley now is in present day Pakistan. Ancient India covered few parts of Afghanistan too and this Indus valley civilisation is known to be even a bit older than Egypt civilisation :)) India got it's name from Indus and this river was also known as Sindhu and the inhabitants came to be known as Hindus:). Sorry for that added info. I hope you don't mind:)

      You are so right….and I know that(when I think about it) …… of course there was no ancient Pakistan. It just goes to show you cannot take for granted that all the information found on the www is correct. What a blunder on the ezine articles webpage! I've a good mind to write to them and tell them. I love that extra information you've given me about the name of the river etc. ……. How very interesting,thank you.

    Much button love from me :)

    I collect old buttons, especially glass ones ... when my sister and I were children they were deemed the most valuable 'treasure' in my grandmother's button box ... I wonder if that's where we all begin to become button obsessed?
